Day 1

DAY 1  // LABORATORIES OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES

When: June 25 at lunch
Address: Politecnico di Milano, Building 32 – Via Giuseppe Colombo 32, Milan
Coordinators: Elena De Momi and Emilia Ambrosini
Number of visitors: 75

1. MBMC (Prof. Frigo) – Movement Biomechanics and Motor Control, is focused on biomechanics of human movement. Its activity includes movement analysis and development of prostheses, orthoses, methods for motor rehabilitation, virtual simulation.

2. Nearlab (Prof. Ferrigno) – The NeuroEngineering and medicAl Robotics Laboratory includes two sections, one which deals with the neural engineering and one which works in the field of medical robotics. The mission of NeuroEngineering Section (NES) is to develop methods and technologies to assist and promote independent living of patients affected by neuromotor disorders. To tackle this mission, we adopt two complementary approaches: both developing rehabilitation technologies able to reach in medium-term the patients, and developing technologies to investigate brain learning mechanisms. The Medical Robotic Section (MRS) is instead aimed at developing innovative methods and devices for clinical and surgical applications. Main current research topics of MRS are surgical planning and navigation and surgical robotics and human robot interfaces.

3. CartCas (Prof. Baroni) – The mission of the CartCas Lab is to develop technologies and methods for computer assisted surgical planning, navigation and tumor localization, with application mainly in high-precision radiation oncology, but also in orthopedic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery. Specific focus is given to translational research, which is empowered by long-lasting, strategic collaborations with national and international clinical institutions, with strong vocation for clinical applied research. Research in Computer Aided Radiotherapy is focused on 2D-3D-4D medical imaging, methods for automatic structures delineation (segmentation), rigid and elastic image registration for planning and on the integration between in-room imaging and motion tracking technologies for patient positioning, therapy set-up verification and tumor localization in image-guided adaptive radiotherapy. A strategic collaboration exists with the CNAO Foundation in the frame of a several year ongoing project which led to the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and clinical use of a customized integrated system for patient positioning in protontherapy and carbon-ion therapy, including optical and image-based patient position verification.

4. LaRes (Prof. Aliverti) – The research activity of the LaRes Lab are in the field of the Bioengineering of the Respiratory System. The mission of the LaRes is to create innovation in respiratory medicine through the development of methodologies and technologies for the analysis, functional evaluation and treatment of the respiratory diseases.

5. TechRes (Prof. Dellacà) – The TechRes Lab develops engineering innovative solutions for respiration. The mission of the TechRes Lab is to design and develop methods, models and engineering innovative applications of the study of the respiration and of the pathologies of the respiratory system.
