1. Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics – LaBS (Prof. Pennati) – LaBS was established in February 2000 and has the mission to carry out applied research in the field of biomechanics. The main activities are the characterisation of tissues and the design and testing of components and devices for medical applications. LaBS has an overall surface of about 600 m2 and is organized in a computational centre, equipped with a HPC (High Performance Computing) cluster, and five distinct experimental laboratories: prosthesis biomechanics, tissue mechanics, micromechanics, life support systems, medical microdevices. Available software enable Computer Aided Design (CAD), solid modelling from medical imaging and numerical simulation of solid (FEA, Finite Element Analysis) and fluid (CFD, Computational Fluid Dynamics) continua. The experimental laboratories are equipped with a number of testing machines – with different load and displacement ranges – for testing tissues, biomaterials and medical devices. A microPIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system is also available.
